Abstract

This article addresses controversial aspects regarding assessing and attributing the altarpiece of the Holy Host of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. The layout of this complex and highly theatrical structure had been attributed in ancient sources to either the painter Francisco Rizi or the greatest master of the royal works, José del Olmo: two architects who were opposite in understanding and practicing architecture.
