WINGED LIONS

Exterior ornaments in the Honorable Congress of the Argentine Nation.

Abstract

In the Honorable Congress of the Argentine Nation, whose design and construction began at the end of the 19th century, the exterior ornamentation is basically Greco-Roman where the Winged Lions stand out due to their location. These are eight sculptures located at the main entrance: four on the roof of the atrium, on the sides of the front; and four on the side bases of the entrance stairs. Building ornamentation, like any image, tells us about ideas, values ​​and concepts of the time in which they were created and used. In this visual analysis it is taken into account that each ornament carries a meaning, not always evident to the observer.
